I love a good glass of wine and fun package design. Over the past few years I have come across some fun and clever wine labels. The wine industry is no stranger to interactive packaging. I have seen wines that allow consumers to color the label or connect the dots to a map of the region the grapes were grown. Last month I was visiting a tasting room in Solvang, California called Sort This Out Cellars.
It was in this tiny tasting room that I found a wine bottle design that was creative and fun. It was a bottle of Pinot Noir called “Pin Me Up Pinot Noir”. It features a pin-up in lingerie that comes with a sheet of stickers to dress her up and change her outfits. As someone old enough to appreciate paper dolls, the bottle brought a smile to my face.
As my friends and I visited and sipped wine, we dressed our “pin up doll” on the bottle…over and over again. It was just fun and reminded us of our youth. I asked Alanna Dixon, the Pineapple Princess at Sort This Out, about the label. She was excited at my interest and enthusiastically shared the story behind the packaging concept.
Alanna explained that creating fun labels is what they do at Sort This Out Cellars but Pin Me Up Pinot Noir was something extra special. It was a labor of love. It was a project they had wanted to do for some time but they wanted to do it right. The entire project took two years to complete. First they needed the right model for the label. They decided on Sabina Kelley, who is a well-known pin-up model and a regular model for other labels they have created. To bring the concept to life, Kelley needed clothes. They wanted clothing that was authentic to the period. They collaborated with Stop Staring! By Alicia Estrada to provide the clothing images. The sticker sheet features clothing from Estrada’s clothing line. Not only can you put the stickers on the bottle, you can go to Estrada’s site and buy the clothes for yourself.
